Storage on an island where space costs real money
Phuket has a storage problem that is really a property problem. Land is finite, demand is high, and the result is that every square metre carries a premium. Renting somewhere just to keep your belongings is one of the more expensive habits available on the island, and a surprising number of people are doing it without ever having priced the alternative.
The hidden cost of keeping a place you are not in
A common pattern: someone leaves for four or five months, keeps the rental so their things have somewhere to sit, and pays full rent the entire time. That is often several times what storing the same belongings would cost, for a place nobody sleeps in. Handing back the keys and putting everything in a box is usually the cheaper decision by a wide margin, and it frees you to take a better place when you return.
Seasonality is the other half of it
Phuket's calendar splits cleanly. High season fills the island, green season empties a good part of it. Businesses that close or scale back need somewhere for their equipment. Residents who travel need somewhere for their furniture. Both peak at the same two moments of the year, around late April and again in October, which is worth knowing when you plan.
